The root of the plant traditionally known as "knitbone" — and for good reason. Comfrey root is exceptionally rich in allantoin, a compound that supports cell proliferation and tissue repair. It has been used for centuries in both human and animal herbalism for bone, joint, and connective tissue support. Comfrey root contains higher concentrations of allantoin than the leaf, making it the preferred choice when deeper structural support is the goal.

Root vs. leaf: Both come from the same plant, but they serve different purposes. Comfrey leaf is lighter, more mineral-rich, and suited for ongoing nutritive support. Comfrey root goes deeper — higher in allantoin and mucilage, it's the go-to for targeted tissue repair and recovery. Many goat keepers stock both and reach for the root when an animal needs more intensive support.

Why goat keepers use comfrey root:

• Exceptionally high in allantoin, which supports cell growth and tissue repair
• Traditionally used to support bone, joint, and connective tissue healing
• Rich in mucilage — soothing to the digestive tract and gut lining
• A staple in recovery protocols after injury, kidding, or hard seasons
• Pairs well with turmeric, willow bark, and meadowsweet in joint and recovery blends

Suggested use: Mix ¼–½ tsp per goat into feed daily during recovery or as needed for targeted support. Comfrey root is best used as a short-to-medium-term therapeutic herb rather than a year-round daily supplement — use it with intention when your animals need it most.
